About Us
Waimakariri District is one of the fastest growing districts in New Zealand and the third largest, by population, in the South Island. We are a team of over 500 employees at Waimakariri District Council and pride ourselves on working passionately on matters that concern our community and district.
Only 20 minutes north of Christchurch, Waimakariri District offers small town and rural lifestyles with a range of outdoor recreation activities on your doorstep, while still enjoying the advantages of a big city nearby. Whatever your choice of living environment, it is readily available and affordable.
About the Role
We are seeking a Land Drainage Engineer to join the Water Services Unit within our Utilities and Roading Department. This is a fantastic opportunity for a motivated and skilled engineer with expertise in environmental and water engineering to join a progressive and customer-focused council.
You’ll take ownership of the operation of our rural drainage and stockwater systems — overseeing maintenance contracts, managing service requests, ensuring compliance with consents, and responding to natural events. You’ll work closely with the public, Council teams, consultants and contractors to deliver high-quality outcomes for both the community and the environment.
About You
- You’re an engineer with experience in drainage systems and a strong interest in environmental outcomes.
- You’re practical, proactive, and solutions-focused, with a collaborative approach to working with others.
- You have excellent communication skills and enjoy building relationships with internal teams and external partners.
- You care about waterway management and understand the importance of environmental and cultural values.
- You’re looking for a role where your work has a positive, lasting impact on your community.
What We Offer
We offer a competitive salary package designed to attract the right person, along with great working conditions and a supportive team environment. You’ll be part of a council that values professional development — we’re a Professional Development Partner with Engineering New Zealand — and we’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer.
