To support this continued growth, Waimakariri District Council is seeking an experienced Building Officer – Technical Advisor to join our Building Consent team within the Planning, Regulation & Environment group.
This role plays a key part in supporting building consenting operations by providing high‑quality technical advice to the public, customers, and internal teams, while ensuring all legislative and technical requirements are met.
About the Role
As a Building Officer – Technical Advisor, you will be a key link between customers and the Building Unit. You will provide technical advice on building matters, verify building consent applications for completeness, and support Council to meet its statutory obligations under the Building Act 2004.
Your work will include:
Providing technical support for building consenting operations
Offering clear, accurate advice to the public, tradespeople and professionals
Research and maintaining current knowledge of building legislation, regulatory changes and trends
Advising and supporting internal building teams and wider Council units
Supporting emergency response activities, including carrying out Rapid Building Assessments when required
Contributing to continuous improvement of Council’s Building Consent Authority quality systems
About you
You will bring strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a customer‑focused approach.
We are looking for someone who has:
Extensive experience in the building industry (ideally 10+ years)
Strong working knowledge of the New Zealand Building Act and Building Code, including various methods of demonstrating compliance with building legislation
Extensive understanding of building systems, and the coordination that occurs across multiple disciplines involved in building approval processes
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to engage positively and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders
A Regulation 18 qualification, or willingness to work towards one
Strong organisational skills and attention to detail
The ideal candidate would possess some or all of the following experience
A trade qualification or tertiary qualification in architectural design
Previous experience in local government or a regulatory environment
Building Emergency Management Tier 2 Assessor
